The villa is composed of two quite distinct constructions: the upper villa, which actually occupies the foundations of an ancient castle, and the lower villa which is placed slightly on a lower level. The upper villa was designed between 1718 and 1722 by Francesco Muttoni and it was completed by Girolamo Dal Pozzo. The lower one, built between 1722 and 1746, was half-destroyed by a fire caused by a lightening in 1841.
