Ca’ Vendramin di Santa Fosca, the home of Gabriele the nobleman
The building is the ancient residence of Gabriele Vendramin, a Venetian noble and refined intellectual who lived during the first half of the sixteenth-century. He was distinguished for his cultural intellect and as a patron of the arts in Venice during that period. He filled his home with paintings by Giorgione, including the famous Tempest, today at the Gallerie dell’Accademia, and works by Tiziano (Gabriele was a client and friend to both).
His Camerino per anticaglie ("junk" room) is renowned as it once hosted the works of art belonging to the noble, including the famous “Libro di disegni" by Jacopo Bellini, now at the British Museum in London and various drawings by Michelangelo. The Ca’ Vendramin di Santa Fosca portico is also remarkable in refined Lombard style carved stone.
