But The America’s Cup at Venice is not all about regattas. There is also a full programme of events and social appointments to add a touch of glamour to the event.

Situating all these appointments in the Arsenal guarantees an exceptional and enchanting setting. In the area of the America’s Cup Village, bars and restaurants will be available where visitors can admire the boats and enjoy the spectacle offered.

The spaces offered by the “Nappe” will host the festivities characterising the two Saturdays of the America’s Cup presence in the city. The calendar of events makes provision for a Louis Vuitton exhibition dedicated to the history of the competition and the cup.

The Arsenal will also be the only venue for the ceremonies to award crews, yachtsmen and the authorities.

A real model lounges in a sparsely decorated room as part of Urs Fischer’s “Madame Fisscher“, a monograph exhibition at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, Italy until 15 July 2012. Fischer is the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the billionaire art collector François Pinault’s Palace on the Grand Canal.

Devised by the artist himself and Caroline Bourgeois specifically for the spaces within Palazzo Grassi, this one-man exhibition will comprise around thirty works dating from the 1990s to the present day – some from other international collections, some new creations. The exhibition will occupy the atrium and the first floor of Palazzo Grassi, whilst the second floor will continue to exhibit works from the François Pinault Foundation. It will be accompanied by a publication devised by the artist and by a programme of films he has selected.

Urs Fischer, born in Zurich in 1973, lives in New York and Zurich. His work has been presented in many international institutions such as the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Kunsthaus (Zurich), the Trussardi Foundation (Milan), Museum Boijmans von Beuningen (Rotterdam), and the New Museum (New York). His participation in the Venice Biennale was considered one of the most striking of the 2011 edition. He has had works in each of the exhibitions at Palazzo Grassi since its reopening in 2005.

Torre Massimiliana, Sant’Erasmo Island

Open until 20 May 2012 in the Torre Massimiliana of Sant’Erasmo, a lush and seldom visited island of the Venetian Lagoon, is the graphicnovel.it exhibition, which is the hub of a little-known form of art in Italy, despite there being many authors born in Italy who have gained international recognition, particularly in France. The Graphic Novel is the artistic and literary movement which brings together, in a single means of expression, the language of comic strips and drawing performed with the most diverse techniques.

Venice aims to grant worthiness to this form of art by hosting, at the Torre Massimiliana, 150 original works taken from comics by 15 Italian authors translated in France, which find their ideal location in the Torre Massimiliana, representing Italian excellence in the domain of the Graphic Novel. For each author, one book is presented along with its drawings and its French and Italian published editions. The artists in the exhibition are: Vittorio Giardino, Lorenzo Mattotti, Igort, Leila Marzocchi, Gabriella Giandelli, Gipi, Davide Toffolo, Stefano Ricci, Davide Reviati, Sara Colaone, Giacomo Nanni, Manuele Fior, Piero Macola, Francesco Cattani and Alessandro Tota.PG

Palazzo Franchetti

From 6 April 2012, at the “PICASSO and VOLLARD. The genius and the art dealer” exhibition, for the first time in Italy, you’ll be able to admire, in the wonderful rooms of the Palazzo Franchetti on the Grand Canal, the 150 works that illustrate in depth the long and thwarted ties between the art dealer Ambroise Vollard and he who would become the greatest artist of the twentieth century, Pablo Picasso.

The carefully arranged exhibition route allows you to observe marvellous works of art close-up, including the 100 carvings of the Vollard Suite, the Minotauromachia, perhaps Picasso’s greatest graphic masterpiece, the 30 original etchings for the Histoire Naturelle by Buffon, the etchings of the Saltimbanchi, with the infamous etching ‘Le repas frugal al Chefs d’oeuvre inconnue’ by Balzac.

At the very beginning of Picasso’s career, having just arrived in Paris, Vollard bought and sold his paintings to Schukin and Morozov, to Gertrude and Leo Stein, to Barnes and Thannhauser, even to Stieglitz, but most importantly, he ordered and printed some of his greatest graphic masterpieces.

Casa dei tre Oci – Giudecca Island

From 30 March to 15 June 2012, in the enchanting setting of the CASA DEI TRE OCI – International Photography Centre, on Giudecca Island, you’ll be able to admire 140 photographs by Elliott Erwitt, which are among the most famous and prominent of his entire career.

As a member since 1953 of the Magnum Agency, founded at the end of the Second World War by a group of photographers including Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa, not only has Erwitt recounted in a journalistic fashion the last six decades of the history of our world and of contemporary civilisation, but has been able to collect, in a set of black and white images, the most tragic and amusing aspects of his life spent striving towards his goal.

The excusive method with which he has undertaken this difficult endeavour is that of the snapshot, which brings out the irony of a universe frozen in peculiar poses, but also the unexpected perfection that can arise quite by chance.

Casa dei Tre Oci International Photography Centre is a place entirely dedicated to photography and the language of contemporary art. It is in this extraordinary location that great internationally renowned photography exhibitions and small exhibitions showing the portfolios of young emerging photographers are held. In the Casa dei Tre Oci, the photography collections belonging to the Venice Foundation may be consulted in digital format, as well as the collections of De Maria and the photography archive and book of Italo Zannier. There is also a library, high-level training centre with various areas for workshops for both basic and specialised courses.

On the occasion of the major Gustav Klimt in the mark of Hoffmann and the Secession exhibition celebrating in Italy the 150th anniversary of Gustav Klimt’s birth and held at the Museo Correr, the International Gallery of Modern Art Ca’ Pesaro will be presenting an exhibition dedicated to the influence of the great painting on Italian art in the early 20th century, culminating with the 1910 Venice Biennale, at which Klimt was present with a room to himself. The exhibition at Ca’ Pesaro, which presents one of Klimt’s greatest masterpieces, the well-known Judith, dating from 1910, will focus on the presentation of two important decorative cycles that were much influenced by the presence of the Austrian artist in Venice in 1910: Vittorio Zecchin’s Le mille e una notte and Galileo Chini’s Primavera.

The canvases by the Murano-born artist were painted in 1914 to decorate the dining room or the Hotel Terminus in Venice. The cycle, which was subsequently dispersed, is today considered one of the greatest masterpieces of the Liberty style (as art nouveau is known in Italy) in Venice; six canvases of the twelve known scenes are conserved at Ca’ Pesaro itself, and will be displayed for the occasion.

In the same year, Antonio Fradeletto commissioned Galileo Chini to decorate the central Salon of the Biennale’s Palazzo dell’Esposizione (Exhibition Venue), which was intended to host Ivan Meštrovic’s personal exhibition, as well as paintings by other artists.

The panels that will be presented at Ca’ Pesaro are on loan from the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, which conserves the most important core collection.

From 24 March to 8 July 2012

On the 150th anniversary of the birth of Gustav Klimt, and a century after his acclaimed participation in the Venice Biennale (1910), the Viennese artist returns to the lagoon as the protagonist of an extraordinary exhibition, which will be held in the display rooms of the Correr Museum from the 24th March to the 8th July 2012. The exhibition is the result of a joint production of the Foundation of Civic Museums of Venice and the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, in collaboration with ORE Cultura – Gruppo 24 ORE and the Arthemisia Group. The curator is Alfreid Weidinger, one of the leading experts on the Austrian artist.

Through a cycle of paintings, rare and valuable drawings, furniture, and elegant jewellery, as well as elaborate reconstructions and interesting historical documents, Gustav Klimt in the Sign of Hoffmann and the Secession, as the Venetian show is entitled, will present the genesis and evolution of Klimt’s work in the fields of architecture and painting, and of those who, with him, gave rise to the Viennese Secession, an instance of that European modernism whose key players included figures like Minne, Jan Toorop, Fernand Khnopff, Koloman Moser, and above all the companion of many intellectual and design ventures, Josef Hoffmann.

In the display rooms of the Correr, as well as the cycles mentioned above, the Judith I (1901) and Judith II (1909), which were acquired at the 1910 Biennale for the Ca’ Pesaro National Gallery of Modern Art, will be brought together again alongside some of the masterpieces from the Vienna Belvedere, the institution that owns the most extensive collection of Klimt’s paintings on canvas, as well as others from public and private collections, including the Lady by the Fireplace (1897/98) The Lovers (1901-1902), Portrait of Hermine Gallia (1904), and The Sunflower (1907). The Doge’s Palace

The first dossier exhibition at the Palazzo Ducale, opening on the 24th February 2012, will be dedicated to Celebrations at the Doge’s Palace: on show will be the valuable prints drawn by Canaletto and engraved by Giambattista Brustolon, works which are well-known even to the general public and which were mostly set in the Doge’s Palace itself. The subjects of the prints can also be seen on the original copper plates, on loan from the Correr Museum where they are now conserved.

The Sala della Quarantia nova civil, situated between the vast Sala del Maggior Consiglio (Hall of the Great Council) and the Sala dello Scrutinio (Voting Hall), where the most important events of the political and administrative life of the Republic unfolded, will be the focal point of the exhibition, in which around ten celebrations at the Doge’s Palace are on display in two different media: captured by the brilliant pen of Canaletto (1697-1768), and skilfully transferred onto copper by the burin of Giambattista Brustolon (1716ca-1796), then transformed into prints.

Through the painstaking and masterful attention to detail, the grandeur of the scenes depicted, and the original points of view that present every detail– garments, buildings, furnishings, boats – in high quality, the splendour, cultural vitality, and wisdom of ancient Venice is restored to us, making a huge contribution to the extraordinarily rich tradition of art and publishing that this universally renowned series enjoyed for almost two centuries.PB
