The Venetian Palace

27 February 2008 · Sport & Folklore,Uncategorized

palazziveneziani.jpgThe Venetian Palace still keeps the signs of its origin as warehouse and then both as residence of noblemen and of merchants. Each palace has got two entrances, one on the water from which the goods get in, called bank, and the other one, on the land, usually led into a courtyard with its own well in the centre, for water supply. Besides, it is bizarre the fact that a town surrounded by water had several problems related to drinkable water. Such problems were solved by means of specific wells which had to collect rain water and filter it. On the ground floor, next to the entrance hall (andron) there is often the mezzanine floor: its sides were divided into two halves along their height, and they were used as business offices by the merchant. The side rooms of the entrance hall, on the first floor or piano nobile, were used as the residence of the owner. In the end, the attic was usually inhabited by his servants and merchantmen.

Venice, Exhibitions: Lawrence Carroll at Correr Museum

from february 16 to may 4, 2008

Correr Museum

lawrencecarroll.jpgA courageous project – an exhibition conceived as a single work of art, with nine rooms on the second floor of the Museo Correr housing some forty different pieces.
Lawrence Carroll is an American artist of Australian origin who now works in Venice. This exhibition is not an attempt to provide a critical pigeonhole for his 25-year career; nor does it aim to present works in chronological order. Instead, the exhibition itself is a creative work, with the artist freely expressing himself in various site-specific installations that are adapted to the size of each individual room. Various strands link neighbouring rooms; overall, there is a continuing shift in visual and spatial perception, with an exploration of different materials and themes. Placed against the walls, in the corners or on the floor, these works of varying size comprise both identifiable objects and more abstract content. The overall effect is one of great poetic impact.
In an age dominated by technology, Lawrence Carroll’s art is the direct product of an individual sensibility, of the artists own hands and vision. It is the fruit of the perceived necessity for the objects of visual communication to be imbued with humanity.
Carroll’s avowed influences are: Mark Rothko and Robert Rauschenberg, for their use of colour and exploration of memory;

mestre.jpgEvery year two million tourists stay at the hotels in Mestre-Venezia. If we make a quick calculation, then, nearly four tourists out of ten who decide to have a holiday in Venice sleep on the dry land. And the increase in such presences is constant: 20% more every year. Of course, it is a consequent tourism, that is relative to people who want to visit the wonderful lagoon town and do not want to spend too much. Moreover, at the end of the day, satisfied with Venice’s beauties, after coming back to their hotels, they are often interested in going round Mestre to look at the numerous shop windows and take the opportunity to do shopping in the fashion, and even to get lost inside the Shopping Centre Le Barche, beside along the town roads. And then, what about sitting down and drinking an aperitif in one of the various modern or retro fashion places in Ferretto Square and neighbouring areas?

Mestre offers also a historical and artistic itinerary which should be exploited in a better way by the local government. It includes a Medieval Tower which was built nearly eight centuries ago and it is the only

Jewish Museum
5.30pm

The Hebrew Museum of Venice will propose to its visitors and to a broader audience a series of weekly concerts entrusted and played by the duo formed by the flautist Anna Fortis and pianist Cristina Ciravolo.  The new initiative – supported by Codess Culture, which for years has been handling the museum services to the public – aim at spreading the knowledge of the lesser known aspects of the Hebrew musical culture.
The choice, in fact, favours some of the famous liturgics pieces, sonatas by Jewish musicians died in the concentration camps, works of non-Jewish authors who have wanted to dedicate their compositions to the Jewish world. The arrangements by flute and piano, often manage to suggest a fascination that only the most typical Venetian atmosphere knows how to render solemn and refined.
Next to the visit to the museum and synagogues, the visitor can now expand his or her own awareness and learning of a culture so important for the modern civilisation.

Concerts are held every Tuesdays at 5.30 p.m.

Gallerie dell’Accademia

Titian shown in the latest stage of his activity, when the artist, who was already about sixty-year-old, had to deal with a new way of painting which had to be looser, more sensual and spiritual at the same time: here is the painter from Belluno, as shown in the monographic exhibition arriving at the Gallerie dell’Accademia of Venice, from 26th January to 20th April, after the success achieved at the exposition in Vienna. There are 28 masterpieces in all – realized by Titian during the period from 1550 to his death occurred in 1576 just in Venice – thanks to which visitors will have the opportunity to find out a kind of painting made of dense brush strokes quickly spreading on the canvases  and giving birth to broken up forms as well as theatrical and emotional representations.
Extraordinary borrowings coming from the most important museums, which will be
