The Second edition of the Venice Jazz Festival, scheduled from 27th July to 2nd August and organized by the Veneto Jazz, is full of important events which will take place on the dry land in Mestre too. Of course, like last year, everything will be enriched with a long list of minor events throughout Venice. The festival will be crowned with a spectacular event in the sumptuous setting of St.Mark’s Square: the concert of the singer-songwriter Paolo Conte and the Symphonic Orchestra of Venice (31st July): a special production that presents elements from the Orchestra of the La Fenice Theatre, accompanied by the artist’s large band directed by Bruno Fontaine. The Theatre La Fenice, namely the temple of world wide music, will be the stage for prestigious events, such as the concert of the trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and his Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (28th July) and the double concert of the saxophonist Charles Lloyd in a quartet, as well as the one of All Star Band of Richard Galliano, namely the world star of accordion (29th July), accompanied by Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano), Richard Bona (double bass), Clarence Penn (drums and percussion instruments).
Since 25th April the Giudecca 795 Gallery in Venice has been given exclusivity in Italy of Cholla’s art, namely a really original American artist: he is a horse! On display thirty extremely coloured watercolours painted by the ‘artist’ that paints spontaneously without any training by holding the brush in his mouth and picking the colour by himself. He is even described as a huge and semi-wild horse, so it is still more amazing that he is able to paint tiny and delicate watercolours with small and graceful movements.

Last Saturday at Palace Ducale the ‘Sms Venice 2009’ project was presented in order to contribute to the collection of funds for the safeguard of the artistic and architectural properties of Venice, an event which last year made Elthon John and Giovanni Allevi be present in St. Marq’s Square. Besides the town council authorities at Palace Ducale there was also the testimonial of the campaign of this year, namely Jim Kerr, the leader of the pop group ‘Simple Minds’, who will perform in a concert in St. Marq’s Square next 14th July. The Sms Venice’ project started in 2008 owing to the joining of purposes of the Venice Town Council, the government department responsible for monuments and other treasures and Fran Tomasi & Associati. Among the aims of the campaign 2009, the restoration of some parts of the Chiesa dei Gesuiti, of the San Giorgio Maggiore’s one, of Rialto Bridge, of the Scuola di San Rocco and S. Giuseppe Church.

In the end, notwithstanding a hard choice by the panel of judges, given the incredible quantity of wonderful masks, more then 70, the judges, directed by the Oscar award Gabriella Pescucci, have decided to give the Prize for the best mask to a group of eight Germans disguised on the theme ‘China in Marco Polo’s days’.
Among fancy dresses representing hot-air balloons, paintings by De Chirico, packs of cards, Inca, traditional Russian dresses, a mask related to La Fenice Theatre and the unfailing Cinderella, in the end the extraordinary fancy dresses and hairstyles with Chinese temples and red lanterns have won.
Two special mentions have been awarded also to a woman disguised as a painting by De Chirico as well
Involving the collaboration of both Ca’ Pesaro museums – the International Gallery of Modern Art and the Museum of Oriental Art – the exhibition comprises some eighty works by the Japanese artist Kuniaki Kurioki (Suki, province of Miyazaki, 1945).
Produced over the last twenty years, these draw upon the unchallenged masterpieces of Japanese art. One source of inspiration is the art of Ogata Kōrin (Kyoto, 1658-1716), a painter and lacquer-worker whose art exemplified the seventeenth-century Rimpa tradition of decoration, which was itself inspired by the art of the Heian period (794-1185). Another is The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, a famous set of coloured wood-cuts created in the years 1833-34 by Utagawa Hiroshige (Tokyo, 1797-1858); enjoying a previously unknown level of popular success, these works formed a sort of ‘travel diary’ in images recounting a journey along the Tōkaidō, the coastal road between Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and Kyoto.

And it does that by carrying out its mission by which, for a century, it has awarded its ateliers to the worthiest artists. It is from here that ‘Opera 2008’ derives, namely a final exposition of the seven young artists and the two groups that made use of ateliers Blm in 2007/2008. besides, this year the foundation celebrates two important anniversaries: first of all the centenary of the expositive activity of such Institution, started in 1908. Since 2008, then, the ateliers have finally reached number twelve, as it has been confirmed in the memorandum of association of the Foundation. This is the very first exhibition dedicated to George Barbier (1882-1932), artist and fashion illustrator, theatre designer and protagonist of the Art deco movement.
The exhibition is a remarkable and fitting opportunity to revive both the memory and knowledge of a considerable renown artist while alive but quickly forgotten after his death. For the first time, it makes it possible to study and understand the diverse aspects of his vast production. It is arranged according to themes. It begins with his early works, then continuing with a section dedicated to theatre and cinema with his drawings for costumes and theatre design. It then goes on with a vast, spectacular section dedicated to fashion illustration – including, amongst other things, pochoir, watercolours and drawings – followed by the priceless, limited editions of the highly refined albums, almanacs and books illustrated by Barbier. 12 September – 16 November 2008 Forty years after his first major show in Venice – a room dedicated to his work at the 1968 Venice Biennale – Morandini returns to Venice with an important exhibition at Ca’ Pesaro, to be held in concomitance with the Biennale Architecture - 11th International Architecture Exhibition.
Comprising more than 60 pieces, the show will include 34 wall sculptures and ‘structures’ in white- or black-lacquered wood that were produced over the period 1978-2008.
