Venice Regatta: VOGALONGA, an amazing and very folk Feast you must not miss!

11th May 2008
Venice Lagoon

vogalonga08.jpgThe Vogalonga is the well known regatta which since 1974 has taken place in Venice on a Sunday in May. Born in order to protest against the water traffic along the Canal Grande and the necessity to protect the lagoon town from the wave-motion caused by the boats with outboard motors (a phenomenon which brings about the erosion of the foundations of the most beautiful Palaces), nowadays it has lost its protesting character and has become an evocative sports celebration you must not miss. From the morning a thick stretch of multi-coloured boats gather in St. Mark’s Basin. From here the 32 km rowing race starts and it moves as far as the islands of the Northern Lagoon in order, then, to go back to the Canal Grande. Everybody, along the canals, supports and greets the participants who, in the latest years, have been of any nationality. Actually it is an amazing and very folk Feast you must not miss.

Venice, Italy: The ‘ Bochaleri’, ceramic artists in Campo San Maurizio

25th April – 1st May 2008
Campo St. Maurizio

bochaleri2.jpgThe name Bochaleri dates back to 1300, when the workers of Venetian ceramic, a refined production appreciated all over Europe, organized in a corporation known as the Scutelarii first and then in Bochaleri. This ancient art, suppressed by a Napoleon decree in 1806, has survived history and oblivion thanks to the efforts of artisans who through the years have conserved and handed down jealously the secrets of the production of tankards and their fine decorations. This year too, close to the Festa of the Sensa, the ‘I Bochaleri’ association is organizing a true fair in Campo San Maurizio from April 25th to May 1st. Visitors can watch all the phases of production and decoration of the ceramic, and children, in particular, may create little objects in clay under the supervision of the expert ‘bochaleri’.

This exhibition, curated by Filippo Pedrocco, can be visited during the normal itinerary of the museum and presents its masterpiece in such field, that is a collection of the representations of the most famous places in the town engraved in copper and shown for the first time in 1741. Of them the complete series of 22 engravings in their first stage are displayed and collected in the album Cicogna which was given as a present to the Venetian Civic Museums in 1865 and which has been restored recently by the Restoration Laboratory of the book of the Abbey of Praglia.
Beside such series, some works in their second stage are exhibited; they are different from the others for the presence of the progressive number put at the bottom on the right by the printer Teodoro Viero, namely the owner of the branches? in the eighth decade of the Eighteenth Century. The presence at Ca’ Rezzonico of works of different artists related to Marieschi (from master Gaspare Dizioni to the fellows Fontebasso and Antonio Guardi, namely the author of the portrait of marshal Schulenburg who was the client of them both) let us make comparisons and deepening too.
This exhibition can be visited with the entrance ticket of the Museum.

More information about Carnival

25th January – 5th February 2008
carnevalevenezia.jpgIt will be a ‘Sensation’ one the Carnival 2008 which is going to be celebrated in Venice: to be heard, to be seen, to be touched an to be imagined. The format of the most popular show in Italy was presented on 21st December 2007, at Venice Casino, by Marco Balich, namely the artistic director of Venice Marketing & Events.
A new Venice Carnival, concerning the five senses plus one, that is, as Balich himself has explained, the mind as place of the soul: each sense will be located in a Venetian sestiere, placing the sixth sense in St.Mark. It is a Carnival, then, which keeps the events of its tradition (such as the flight of the Dove and the Feast of the Maries) but which will decisively break off with the past: it will be a repeating format that will aim at creating a lively and consolidated image of Venice Carnival, which can be sold abroad and used to the utmost both by the Venetians and tourists.
The concepts presented by Balich will keep into consideration the dry land and sees Mestre and Marghera as two locations able to catch the attention of a numerous public. In few days the detailed programme of the various events will be at your disposal.

Salute Church

The Feast of Salute is, with no doubt, the one with the less tourist impact, recalling a real popular religious feeling.
Also such festivity, like that of Redentore, reminds us of another terrible plague occurred during the two-year period 1630-1631, and the succeeding vow made by the Doge in order to get the intercession of the Virgin.
Those who have the opportunity to be in Venice during the day of Salute can breathe an atmosphere of genuine and heartfelt popular participation, as well as not pharisaic religiosity, but deeply related to the history and traditions of the town. Every year, for this feast, a temporary bridge on boats is built: it crosses the Canal Grande and links the areas of St. Moisè and St. Maria del Giglio (sestiere of St. Marco) to the Basilica of Longhena (sestiere of Dorsoduro), in order to allow the passage of the procession. Tens of thousands of people go on a pilgrimage to pay homage to the
